1326942 Animal holding appliances E B EDMUNDS 15 Oct 1971 [17 July 1970] 34848/ 70 Heading A5R An animal restraining device comprises a horizontal rail 22, a spacing member 52 one end of which is mounted on and free to rotate on the horizontal rail, a forked unit 66 to which the spacing member is pivotally hinged and which includes two arms 68, 70 defining a slot open at its lower end, the arms being non-rotatably attached to a bar 60 which is in turn pivotally hinged to the other end of the spacing member and one or more stops, which in the embodiment shown are two gates 24, 26 positioned to act as stops for the arms 68, 70. Rotation of the bar 60 relative to the member 52 is limited by a stud 62 and a slot 64 in a connecting T-piece 58. The gates are positioned vertically below the rail 22. The gates 24, 26 define a slot 28 open at its upper end in which a cow's neck may be positioned when the forked unit is swung away from the gates, and in which the cow's neck is confined when the forked unit is swung back against the gates. The gates are held together by a sleeve 86 which can be slid entirely on to the gate 24 to allow both gates to be swung about vertical bars 18, 20. The spacing apart of the gates and the arms 68, 70 is adjustable. For raising the forked unit out of engagement with the stops to release the cow, a rotatable horizontal bar 76 having a stud 78 arranged to co-operate with an indent 80 of a sleeve 74 to which one end of a cord is attached, the other end of the cord being attached to the bar 60, is rotated so that the cord is wound round the sleeve 74. A number of the devices may be positioned side-by-side.
