1326811 Vanadium pentoxide D A PAKHOMOV S M ARKHIPOV A E PRUNTSEV S A MILSKY and A P PLESKACHEV 28 May 1971 18070/71 Heading C1A Vanadium pentoxide is produced by reacting ammonium vanadate with 2À0-2À5 N inorganic acid (e.g. nitric or hydrochloric acid) in an amount of 1À0-1À1 g equiv. of acid per g. equiv. of ammonium vanadate at a temperature of between 70‹ and 95‹ C. during 10-20 minutes to yield vanadic acid and the ammonium salt of the inorganic acid, separating the vanadic acid precipitate from the mother liquor containing said ammonium salt and excess inorganic acid, washing the vanadic acid precipitate with water until the pH of the washings is 4-5 and calcining the washed precipitate at a temperature of 500-600‹ C. The washing may be carried out for a period of up to 3 hours and the washings used in the preparation of the inorganic acid and ammonium vanadate reactants. The vanadic acid precipitate may also be washed with a 0À2-0À5% by weight inorganic acid aqueous solution prior to being washed with water and the washings obtained thereby mixed with the mother liquor and neutralized with ammonium carbonate to produce an aqueous solution which may be used in the preparation of an aqueous solution of ammonium salt of an inorganic acid which may in turn be reacted with an alkali metal vanadate to produce the ammonium vanadate reactant.
