Abstract
1326741 Fluid fuel burner with counterflow INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 July 1970 [8 Oct 1969] 49496/69 Heading F4T A method of burning fluid fuel, e.g. oil, comprises, (i) initially projecting an ignited tongue Q of fuel from a nozzle assembly G to a principal burning zone U at a burner head J, (ii) extracting at a location R part of the tongue and causing it to counterflow back towards the nozzle assembly, (iii) reintroducing the counterflow back into the tongue Q near the nozzle assembly, (iv) causing the flame of tongue Q to be extinguished when a predetermined temperature has been attained, and simultaneously therewith (v) causing the generation of blue flame 64, T both at location R and at the burner head J. A burner (10) for burning oil by this method includes an inner burner tube A, a surrounding jacket B, tube A and jacket B defining a counterflow chamber O between them, a fuel nozzle G, an ignition electrode H, burner head J, apertured annular bands M, N through which the counterflow circulates, and means, preferably a circuit as in Fig. 7 (not shown) including a bimetallic switch and a probe 88, for effecting thermostatic cut-out of ignition electrode H, thereby generating blue flames 64, T at location R and burner head J. End walls K, L have central annular apertures 26, 28 respectively for the introduction of combustion air, wall L having a frusto-conical funnel 32 intake, and burner head J includes a pair of spaced apertured plates 34. Further apertured plates 36, 38 are for air distribution and flame arresting respectively. A housing 54 with apertures 58 whose effective area may be varied by overlying adjustable ring 60 controls air admission to the interior of tube A. In operation of the burner, oil is aspirated from a reservoir by an air pump and is ejected with air from nozzle assembly G to be ignited by electrode H, a tongue of flame extending into burner head J. An outer annular layer of the tongue passes through band M, chamber O, band N and thus recirculates. After about 60-90 seconds, when a sufficiently high temperature is attained, electrode H is cut-off and the vaporized oil/air mixture establishes blue flames 64, T, combustion air being supplied through aperture 30 and being distributed by plate 36.
