Abstract
1326288 Flame-proofing textiles J P STEVENS & CO Inc 19 April 1971 [2 Feb 1970] 23836/71 Heading DIP Cellulose-polyester blended fabrics are rendered flame-retardant by impregnation of said fabric with (1) tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride (THPC) and urea or a precondensate thereof and (ii) a melamine formaldehyde condensate which may or may not be further condensed with methanol and a polyethylene glycol mono- or di-ester of an aliphatic saturated or unsaturated fatty acid of 8-24C while maintaining the moisture content of the fabric at a minimum of 20% by weight. Impregnation steps (i) and (ii) may take place simultaneously or separately from an aqueous dispersion or solution of the specified compounds. The THPC and urea and the precondensates are cured on the fabric by dry heat or wet-fixation using steam, or a moist environment, e.g. by wrapping the fabric in polyethylene whilst wet. The cellulose component of the fabric may be cotton or regnerated cellulose.
