Abstract

1325967 Hose coupling H E MINGO 10 Aug 1971 37539/71 Heading F2G The outer layer of a hose end 24 is removed to reveal a reinforcement layer 27 before connection to a coupling in which a ferrule 20 is radially compressed to engage an insert 11 and to grip the reduced diameter hose end 25 which is drawn on to a stem portion 17 of the insert and over a tapered section 18 thereon. A flange 16 on the insert 11, which has a bore (12) (Fig. 1, not shown), engages the ferrule 20 and a section 15 of the insert between the flange 16 and a hexagonal gripping portion 13 receives a distorted portion of the ferrule 20 after crimping. The ferrule may have internal gripping ridges and a counterbore section 23 which admits a short length of the full-diameter hose portion. The ferrule is radially compressed by an annular segmental die 28 to shape the ferrule as in Fig. 6. Arcuate thickened portions 32, 33 around the hose entry portion and flange 16 are formed by the compression and the flaring of the hose end 27 drawn over the tapered stem portion 18 is increased. A rod 31 may be introduced into the stem bore to prevent collapse under the high pressures necessary. The insert 11 and ferrule 20 may be of steel.
