1325699 Seaming non-metallic sheet material MEINAN MACHINERY WORKS Inc 18 Sept 1970 44710/70 Heading B5K A method of splicing veneer sheets comprises advancing the sheets one after another along a horizontal path, detecting unusable portions of each sheet, stopping a sheet when an unusable portion thereof is detected, cutting off the unusable portion, sorting the usable sheet portion from the unusable portion and joining the usable portions edge to edge. In one method a veneer sheet 10, Fig. 2, is advanced by a conveyer 1 and roller 5 past detecting means 3. The means 3 detects the unusable leading edge of the sheet 10, stops the feed of the sheet, and causes the unusable portion to be cut off by a cutter 4 and discharged between the roller 5 and a raised pivotable veneer sorting member 6. The member 6 is then lowered and the usable portion of the sheet 10 fed on to it by a pressing roller 7, Fig. 5, as well as the roller 5. When the unusable trailing edge of the sheet 10 is detected by the means 3 the feed is again stopped and the unusable portion cut off by the cutter 4. The member 6 is then raised, Fig. 7, lifting the usable sheet 10 and permitting discharge of the unusable portion 10<SP>11</SP>. The next sheet, 11, is then advanced and its leading edge trimmed as for the sheet 10. Member 6 and sheet 10 are then lowered and the mating edges of sheets 10 and 11 are bonded by a device 8, Fig. 9, e.g. by attaching a bonding tape or applying bonding agent to the splicing portions of both veneer sheets. In another embodiment, the means 3 is capable of detecting unusable thin portions in the body of a veneer sheet and these are removed in a manner analogous to that of removing the unusable trailing and leading edges of a pair of adjacent sheets.
