Abstract

1325689 Laminates PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 23 Nov 1970 [13 Aug 1970] 55673/70 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B7 and H4] An aerial window comprises a pair of matched glass sheets 12, 14, a notch 20 being provided in the former for receiving a metal tab 22. A continuous length of fine electroconductive wire 18 is mounted in a plastic interlayer 16, which is bonded between the glass sheets. The central portion 19 of the wire 18 lies within the notch 20 and is connected to the tab 22. A radio receiver lead 24 is also connected to the tab 22, at a point 23. A piece 60 of transparent, adherent tape of electrical insulation material such as polyurethane is positioned over the notch 20, on the outer face of the glass sheet 12, and the cavity so formed is filled with a fast setting electrical insulating material, such as a polysulphide resin or a vulcanizable silicon. Excess material may be removed from the edge of the window by a spatula 70 having an elongated slot 72 and a handle 74, and masking tape may be put over the rear surface of the glass sheet 14 behind the notch 20. The lead 24 may be provided with a plug 25, and the central portion 19 of the wire may be connected to the tab 22 at two points 56, 58 and loops 51, 52, 53 be provided between said points and between each point and the interlayer 16, as claimed in Specification 1,325,690. During manufacture the matched glass sheets are bent together, a suitable parting material such as a suspension of finely divided diatomaceous earth in water having first been applied between them. The interlayer may be a sheet of plasticized polyvinyl butyral, the aerial wire being embedded therein by means of a hot needle which is guided along a template. On assembly, the plastic sheet is put between the glass sheets and is trimmed. After pre-pressing, lamination is carried out by heating in an autoclave for about 45 minutes at a temperature of about 275‹ F. and under a pressure of about 225 lbs./sq. inch.
