Abstract

1325651 Spring upholstery D L ROWLAND 11 Jan 1972 [22 March 1971] 1265/72 Heading A4M [Also in Division D1] A seating or back-rest member 70, 70A for installation on the frame of a chair 60 comprises a plurality of sinuous or zig-zag spring wires 76a-76n arranged side-by-side so that they each touch or nearly touch adjacent said spring wires, each spring wire having in its relaxed unstressed condition an arcuate shape, means such as rim member 73 for rigidly securing the wires adjacent their ends, and a sleeve-like plastics coating 79 surrounding the wires 76 and their securing means, the coating 79 also serving to join together the wires in the regions in which they touch or nearly touch to define a unitary assembly in the shape of an arcuate cylindrical segment. To install the assembly in the chair frame it is flattened to a larger radius are against the stress in the spring wires 76 by pulling apart the ends of the assembly with a force in the range 340-680lbs. As shown, the spring ends 77 are passed through openings 94 in a rim member 73, located by abutment with a first punched out wing 93 and frictionally retained by a second punched out wing 92. The Specification describes a number of alternative arrangements of rim members for locating and inter-connecting the spring ends, Figs.11, 14, 16, 17, 21, 25, 30, 31 (not shown). Alternatively, Fig.29 (not shown), the springs are secured to each other by welding (146) adjacent their ends. Various means of attaching the unitary assembly to a seat frame are described, Figs.3 16-20, 27, 36 (not shown). The Specification also describes and illustrates, Figs.43-51 (not shown) a variety of alternative patterns of sinuosity of the spring wires including arrangements in which sinuos wires of different patterns of sinuosity are included in the same unitary assembly. The assembly may include bent or fishmouth ends, Figs.33-35 (not shown).
