Abstract

1325313 Long chain alkylated phenols IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 57130/69 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] The invention comprises phenols of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group branched at the α-position and optionally substituted by an aryl group, or is a cycloalkyl group optionally substituted by a hydrocarbyl group, R<SP>2</SP> is H or an alkyl or cycloalkyl group optionally substituted by a hydrocarbyl group, and X is a straight chain saturated or unsaturated C 15 hydrocarbyl group. They may be obtained by alkylating a phenol of formula with alkylating agents corresponding to R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> by using for example (a) 1 molar proportion of an olefin, (b) an excess of olefin, or (c) two different alkylating agents either in admixture or in separate steps. Examples are given for the preparation of the phenols. They are useful as antioxidants.
