Abstract

1325171 Coking and gasifying ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 28 Oct 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 51144/70 Heading C5E Coke, and gases 34 containing H 2 and CO, are made by a process which includes circulating coke between a fluidized bed coking vessel 1 and a heating vessel 12, and passing coke (by line 25, 26) from the vessel 12 to a gasifying vessel 27 to which steam 28 and air or O 2 , 29 are supplied. Gases and entrained coke are passed upwardly from the vessel 27 at 30 to the vessel 12 to provide the heat required, optionally augmented by combustion of a portion of the gases with air supplied at 31. Vessels 12, 27 have fluidized beds. The feedstock 2 is a heavy residuum, coal char slurry or a bitumen from coal, tar sands or shale, and may include a recycled heavy stream 22. In a modification, the vessel 27 has an inert captive fluidized bed of mullite or alundum, the coke flow being as described above. Gasification in the vessel 27 may be complete, as shown, or partial, product coke being obtained at 33, and the vessels 12, 27 may comprise a single vessel separated by a grid.
