1324777 Cooling dynamo-electric machines ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970] 5867/70 Heading H2A In a dynamo-electric machine cooling arrangement, hot gas is exhausted from both the stator core 20, Fig. 1B and rotor 60 into the stator/ rotor gap 79 and flows in both directions along the gap to hot gas collection chambers 29, Fig. 1B and 29A, Fig. 1A (not shown), at each end of the stator core, from which the gas passes through a cooling arrangement to a blower 69 mounted on the machine shaft. There are two coolers 100, Fig. 4 (which is a section on line A-A) and associated cooler inlet and outlet ducts A, B, the coolers and ducts extending along the full length of the machine. The inlet ducts A communicate with the hot gas collection chambers 29, 29A and the outlet ducts B with an annular cool gas collection chamber 23 on the low pressure side of the blower 69. Cooling the rotor.-Gas flows from the blower 69 into both ends of the rotor, reaching the right hand end of the rotor via passages 66, 67 bypassing a rotary seal 61, and reaching the left hand end of the rotor via pipes C (bottom of Fig. 4), an annular chamber 28 (Fig. 1A) at that end, and similar passages 66, 67. Within the rotor the gas flows axially (72) towards the centre of the machine, then radially (73, 74), then axially in both directions and finally radially outward (75, 76) into the stator/rotor gap 79. The gas may pass through hollow conductors, sub-slots, slots at the sides of the conductors or ducts between conductors. Cooling the stator.-Gas flows from the blower 69 via an annular chamber 27 to a duct (top of Fig. 4) which extends to the end of the stator core. From the duct C the gas passes between baffles as 32A, 32F, to the periphery of the stator core, and thence into radial duets 85 which are blocked at their inner ends, in both directions along axial ducts 87, and finally through further radial ducts 84, blocked at their outer ends, into the stator/rotor gap 79. The stator windings are liquid cooled by a separate cooling arrangement.
