Abstract

1324309 Making seed tapes UNION CARBIDE CORP 1 May 1972 20236/72 Heading B8C An apparatus for making seed tape comprises a mandrel 15 having a V-shaped groove with a rounded bottom in which a tape 10 is formed into a V-shaped trough, a device (19, Fig. 3) for depositing individual or groups of seeds 20 at desired intervals in the trough (U.S. Patent No. 3,561,187 and Specification 1,268,981 referred to), a circular eye 25 through which the tape passes and which has a step for overlapping the edges of the tape 10 and rollers 31, (32, Fig. 3) mounted on horizontal axes for flattening the tape to seal the overlap which lies along one flattened side of the tape. The bottom of the groove in the mandrel 15 is at first horizontal, then slightly downwardly inclined and increasingly rounded between the seed depositing device (19) and the eye 25. A second smaller eye 27 is provided downstream of the first eye 25. A pair of fial closing rollers (35, 36) mounted on vertical axes are situated downstream of the rollers 31 (32) and the tape is turned through 90 degrees between the two sets of rollers. Each roller 31, (32, 35, 36) has a peripheral indentation (40, Fig. 4) filled with a soft rubber backing member (43, Fig. 4). The tape may be of water-soluble polyoxyethylene, in which instance at least part of the tape is sprayed with moisture from an applicator (13. Fig. 3) to render the tape self-adhering. Alternatively glue or gum is sprayed on to the tape, or the tape is coated with a gum made tacky by moistening or a fixative material which requires no moistening is provided.
