Abstract

1324374 Photographic diffusion transfer process EASTMAN KODAK CO 29 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 46253/70 Heading G2C A photographic material comprising a support and a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and containing a dye developer (which is a compound which contains a chromophoric system of a dye and a silver halide developing function or a so-called 'shifted' dye developer as disclosed e.g. in Specification 3230085) in the emulsion layer or in a layer adjacent thereto is imagewise exposed and developed by allowing an alkaline aqueous liquid at a pH greater than 9 that causes the dye developer to develop the latent image to permeate the layers of the material and allowing residual unoxidized dye developer to transfer by diffusion and in register to a dye image receiving layer, an additional silver halide developing agent being present in the liquid during development which has the property of forming a lactone which is not a developing agent on lowering the pH of the liquid to not lower than 2. The additional developing agent may form a lactone at a pH between 6 and 9. Development may be stopped by reacting the alkali in the liquid with acid so as to lower the pH of the liquid to a level at which the lactone is formed. The acid may be in the form of a polymeric acid layer beyond the dye image receiving layer relative to the direction of diffusion of the dye developer. The additional developing agent may be a 2- hydroxy-cinnamic acid having an OH or amino substituent at the 3- or 5- position e.g. of the formula:- wherein R 1 and R 2 are each H, halogen or alkyl; R 2 may also be OH; R 3 and R 5 are each H, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen or aryl; R 5 may also be OH; R 4 and R 6 are each H, OH, amino, substituted amino, 1-5C alkyl, 1-5C alkoxy or aryl, at least one of R 4 and R 6 being OH or amino or substituted amino or salts thereof. The additional developing agent may be present in an overcoat layer. The material may comprise red-, green- and blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion layers and contiguous layers containing cyan, magenta and yellow dye developers respectively. The material may comprise a layer of a water-insoluble salt as defined in claim 1 of Specification 1096343 between adjacent dye image-forming units comprising a silver halide emulsion layer and associated dye developer. A rupturable container containing an alkaline aqueous liquid having a pH greater than 9 that causes due developers to develop latent images in the exposed material may be attached to the material. Dye images produced having improved D min values.
