Abstract

1323639 Igniting gas burners; lamps D A BERLINCOURT and E O SCHWEITZER 9 Dec 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 57227/71 Headings F4F F4R and F4T A gaseous fuel lantern comprises a substantially bag like mantle 32 secured, e.g. by tying with asbestos thread around a burner nose 28, a gas conduit 14 having an orifice located within a tube 20 supporting the burner and mantle and serving as a mixing tube for the gas and air to be burnt at the burner nose 28 and a piezo-electric ignition device 40 for the lantern connected by means of an insulated electrode 44 which passes along the tube 20 to a spark gap 51 formed between itself and an electrode 48 which is earthed to the body of the lantern, the spark gap 51 being located within the mantle 32. A shutoff valve 16 is provided in the conduit 14 and the piezo-electric device 60 may be manually operated. A glass globe 36 surrounds the mantle 32. The burner nose 28 may be provided with a ceramic insert 28b in which case the insulation 46 on the electrode 44 need only extend as shown. However the burner nose may be metallic in which case the electrode will need to be insulated where it passes through the nose. In this case the cutting electrode may be dispensed with and the spark gap may be formed between the electrode 44 and the nose itself. Embodiments are also described having three burners similar to that shown in Fig. 1 side by side within a common glass globe, the spark gaps for the burners being connected in series.
