Abstract
1323351 Aliphatic secondary amines FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 14 Aug 1970 [14 Aug 1969] 39301/70 Heading C2C In a process for the manufacture of aliphatic saturated secondary amines from unsaturated nitriles or mixtures of saturated and unsaturated nitriles having from 8 to 22 carbon atoms per molecule optionally in admixture with unsaturated and/or saturated amines of similar chain length, the starting material is hydrogenated in a first step to yield a mixture of saturated amines and the mixture is desaminated continuously in a second step, each step being carried out in the presence of a fixed bed hydrogenation catalyst. Preferably the first step is carried out at a pressure of 100 to 300 atmospheres gauge and at a temperature of 100‹ C to 200‹ C and the second step at a pressure of 0 to 50 atmospheres gauge and a temperature from 120‹ C. to 220‹ C. Among the starting materials employed are oleyl, tallow acid and coconut fatty acid nitriles. Catalysts used in the first step include nickel and/or cobalt and in the second step cobalt or copper-chromium or copper cadmium catalysts.
