Abstract

1323236 Cigar wrappers AMF INC 6 Aug 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 36998/71 Heading A2C A device for automatically inspecting a tobacco leaf for a cigar wrapper for holes or voids comprises a depressed area shaped to cover the configuration of the cigar wrapper, wall members 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 coupled to divide said depressed area into one or more discrete compartments 44, 46. 48, 50, 52, a passageway 54 connecting each compartment 44-52 with a chamber 24, and pressure sensing means 72 coupled to measure pressure in each compartment 44-52 when a strip of tobacco leaf is positioned over said depressed area and suction is applied to the chamber 24. A relatively rigid perforated member 74 overlies the said depressed area to support the tobacco strip either directly or via an air permeable conveyer belt 122. The suction applied to each compartment 44-52 can be individually adjusted by means of a pre-set conical member 64 co-operating with each passageway 54. A feeler 76 is provided to detect the presence of a vein in the tobacco leaf. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), optical means are used to detect the presence of a vein in the leaf.
