Abstract

1322918 Adjusting traverse length OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 26 Nov 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 56296/70 Heading D1J Glass fibre strand is wound onto a rotating collector 34, 35 whilst oscillating the strand by means of rotating guides 44, 45, and reciprocating the guides 44, 45 with a decreasing and increasing stroke length. As shown in Figure 7, the guides are mounted on a carriage 46 reciprocated by a bridge piece 150 engaging a screw 148, which can be driven in either direction by a unidirectional motor 156 through gears 162, 172 or belt 178 by alternatively engageable electromagnetic clutches 164, 174. Reversal of the direction of the carriage 46 is by electrical contact of a projection 183 on the bridge piece 150 with probes 180 or 182, acting as limit switches. The probes 180, 182 can be moved together or apart (Fig. 8) along threaded rods 192, 194 engaged by internally threaded gears 202, 204 rotated by a gear shaft 186 driven by a stepping motor 184 (Fig. 7). The probes may be movable independently and/or at different speeds, or in the same direction. The oscillators may be of the 'butterfly' type shown, or (Fig. 11) comprise self-threading guides 240, 242 reciprocated by grooves in a rapidly rotating drum 244. The package is driven at constant peripheral speed by means of a motor 48 and an eddy-current clutch 49, the flux in which is controlled by a programmer, and the oscillator mechanism is also driven by the same motor and clutch via belt drives 61, 63, 84 and 92, a disc brake 230, 232 being provided on the spindle, operable by air pressure to stop rotation on completion of the package.
