In the above formula, D is an aromatic radical; r 2 is alkylene; r 3 is H, alkenyl, alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aralkyl; r 4 is H, alkenyl or alkyl; r 9 is H, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy; X- is an anion and either r 1 is H, optionally substituted methyl, substituted ethyl, optionally substituted alkyl with at least 3 carbon atoms or alkenyl and r 10 is H, halogen, CN, alkyl, alkoxy, -NHCO-alkyl, -NH-CHO, -NH-SO 2 -alkyl, aryloxy, aralkoxy, -SO 2 - alkyl, -SO 2 -aryl or -CO-alkyl, or r 1 is H, alkyl or alkenyl and r 10 is any of the groups mentioned above but may not represent hydrogen. The coupling components may be prepared by quaternizing the corresponding amines containing a group -Nr 3 r 4 or -Nr 4 CH 2 -D with a compound of formula X-CH 2 -D or r 3 X respectively where x is a radical which forms an anion under the reaction conditions. Alternatively, a compound of formula may be reacted with an amine of formula The amines which are quaternized may themselves be prepared by reaction of an appropriate mono-N-substituted aniline with a compound of formula Cl-r 2 -NÀr 3 r 4 .HCl.
