Abstract

132,281. Vickers, Ltd., and North, T. K.. March 2, 1918 Projectile fuses. - Consists in a percussion fuse in which the firing- pin normally lies out of the operative position but is, during the flight of the shell, automatically moved into position for firing the detonating-cap by an axially displaceable device deriving its axial movement from the difference in effective air pressure upon opposing surfaces thereof. The firing-pin C is pivoted on a hollow stem A<2>, and normally lies obliquely in a recess in a pillar a'. A cap B is attached to the stem A<2>, its outer; edge bearing against the fuse body A, against which the cap is securely held by a heavy ring B'. When the projectile is discharged, the ring. sets back, deforming the flange b of the cap and moving past it, so that the cap is freed. The ring has a flange b<1>, which becomes wedged into a recess a<x>. At the same time, a plug a<2> in the stem A' sets back beyond holes A<2x>, and air entering the stem and passing through these holes forces the cap B and stem A<2> forward. By this means; the firing-pin C is turned into axial alinement with the detonating- cap D, against which it is driven, by light impact, to fire it.
