Abstract

1322680 Hip-joint prosthesis BENOIST GIRARD & CIE SA 24 May 1972 24535/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division G1] A hip-joint prosthesis comprises a metal femural member having a pin 6 and a spherical male form 8, and a hemispherical cctyloid cupula 11, for insertion into the hip bone 1, the prosthesis being characterized by the fact that either the spherical form or the cotyloid cupula has an interrupted spherical bearing surface. In the embodiment shown this surface consists of projecting portions 21, 22, 23, 24 separating depressed zones 25, 26, 27, 28, the depressed zones intercommunicating through the channels (29) in order to allow circulation of a lubricant filling the depressed zones. The thickness of the projecting portions varies such that whatever the relative angular position of the two cooperating forms, their common contact will be approximately constant. In an alternative embodiment the convex surface of the cupula has a honeycombed pattern, Figs. 7, 8, 9 (not shown) improved anchorage in the cement of the cupula. Similarly the concave surface of the cupula may have a honeycomb pattern with inter-communicating channels (33).
