Abstract
1322446 Pressure-sensitive adhesive coated article W R GRACE & CO 28 July 1971 [28 July 1970 11 May 1971] 35544/71 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] A pressure-sensitive adhesive article comprises a substrate having on at least one face a polythioether cured to a tacky condition. The substrate may be woven or non-woven fabric which may be plastics-coated or -impregnated, paper, stainless steel, aluminium foil, fibreglass, "Cellophane" (Trade Mark), cellulose acetate or butyrate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyethylene terephthalate, PVC, polyvinylidene chloride, PVA, polyvinyl butyral or a vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or vinyl acetate copolymer or may be a release backing of polyethylene or silicone paper. The polythioether elastomer may incorporate a foaming agent and is applied to the substrate by spraying, knife, roller, direct or indirect gravure coating, extrusion or slotted head curtain coater coextrusion. It may contain as tackifier a polyterpene, polystyrene, hydrogenated resin ester or hydrocarbon resin and is cured by UV light, electron beam, beta radiation or a chemical free-radical generator. It may be further cured during use by ambient UV radiation. The substrate may be pretreated by corona treatment or with a primer coat of natural rubber or urethane elastomer and may have a release coating on its reverse face of polysiloxane or polyvinyl alcohol/octadecyl isocyanate. The polythioether is generally prepared (possibly "in situ") from a polythiol/poly-ene or -yne mixture which gives a low cross-link density polymer when cured, numerous polyenes and -ynes being specified. The article of the invention may also be used in ceramic, asphalt, plastics or rug tiles, acoustic tiles, billboard displays, posters, signs, wall coverings and plaques.
