1321932 Securing start of winding E L JOHANSSON 16 June 1971 [16 June 1970] 28257/71 Heading D1J A machine for winding sewing-machine bobbins 25 (Fig. 1) comprises a rotor 11, driven via belt 21 from motor 19, with a central stem 23 on which the bobbin 25 is mounted, means for attaching the thread end to the rotor (in this embodiment a spring clip 65) at a greater radius than that of the bobbin, and a catching member 89 movable into the path of a thread extending between clip 65 and the bobbin as the rotor rotates, so as to draw the thread end out of the clip. In operation, thread is stretched between tensioner 33 and clip 65 in the Fig. 3 position, where the rotor automatically stops due to a pin 55 thereon engaging a portion of a starting lever 37. Lever 37 is depressed, starting the motor and causing a pressing arm 51 to engage the surface of the thread, which commences winding on the bobbin. Initially catching member 89 is held out of the path of the rotating thread end by a projection on the arm 51, which, as the winding grows, releases member 89 to free the thread end from clip 65. Further growth of the package moves arm 51 to a point where lever 37 is allowed to spring up once more, and package rotation is halted. The wound bobbin is removed manually, the thread linking it to the supply being then again tucked under clip 65 and cut on a knife edge 77. A new bobbin is placed on the stem, and the operation re-started.
