Abstract
1321625 Purification of waste water CORODEX NV 2 Nov 1970 [7 Nov 1969] 52047/70 Heading C1C The purification of waste water containing phenols and formaldehyde comprises adding phenol until the phenol : formaldehyde ratio is from 1 : 1À02 to 1 : 1À12 and adjusting the normality to 0À015 to 0À10N, then heating the solution to 80-85‹ C. followed by removal of water by heating to at least 5‹ C. below the boiling point of the liquid mixture and separating the phenol(s) and formaldehyde as a low molecular weight resin. The separation of the resin may be accelerated by the injection of fine jets of air. This also facilitates the removal of volatiles. A suitable apparatus for carrying out the purification process is shown in the Figure wherein waste liquid is mixed with phenol and water containing acid in mixing tank 1 and passed under pressure via line 3 into reaction tank B, which includes a heating member 4, volatile solvents discharge pipe 6, an air injector and a drain pipe 28 which communicates with a resin settling tank 7. This tank is fitted with a resin drain 25 and through pipe 9 connects with a tank 10 which latter tank communicates via an overflow 11 with the reaction tank B. The tank 10 is also connected to the expansion boiling vessel 15, and to the resin separating tank 13. Heating member 14 is connected to the tank 15 and volatile compounds are discharged from the pipe 17, the resin collecting in tank 13, draining therefrom via the drain 30. A pipe 29 is provided to drain off any water containing acid which water may be recycled via pipe 21 to mixing tank 1 for mixing with untreated waste water.
