Abstract

1321364 High-frequency electrical surgery ELECTRO MEDICAL SYSTEMS INC 25 June 1971 29970/71 Heading A5R Electrosurgical apparatus comprises a generator 20, Figure 1, for generating oscillations of high-frequency electrical energy of substantially constant amplitude, means 10 for controlling the duration of the generation of the energy to produce a series of oscillations over a predetermined time interval and for controlling the spacing in time between each series produced, and electrodes 103, 115 coupled to the generator. The apparatus is used for cutting body tissue and coagulating the blood at the area of the cut by applying envelopes of R.F. electrical energy of an oscillatory wave-form A-F, Figure 7. In operation, the active electrode 115 is placed on a patient 220 perform a cut the power supply switch (211) lying on a passive, plate electrode 103. To is turned on and resistors (203), (204) are set to give the required power levels and switch 102 is closed for the "cut 1" mode. The treadle switch 127 is switched by the surgeon to the "cut" mode and thus connects to contact 128 and energises relay 101. Terminals 43b, 45 of the power supply 40 and switch 100 are closed to energise the generator and produce high-frequency electrical energy as represented by waveform C, Figure 7. The R.F. energy is amplified by power amplifier 30 and flows from the active electrode 115 to cut the body tissue of the patient 220, the energy returning to earth via plate electrode 103 and dissipating in R.F. chokes 121, 124, 125. The coagulation of the blood flowing from the cut tissue is achieved by operating switch 127 to move from contact 128 to 129 to energise relay 105. Contacts 100 open and terminal 21 is no longer grounded and contact 104 closes terminals 12, 13 of the control multivibrator 10 to connect capacitor (C30) in parallel with capacitor (C5). In the "coagulate" mode, the potential at terminals 11, 12 alternately changes between different levels, each level being of a selected duration which is established by the timing cycle of the flip-flop circuit of the multivibrator, Figure 2 (not shown). The voltage waveform at the output of the multivibrator 10 may thus be represented by a pulse-shaped waveform B. A third mode, "cut 2", allows both cutting and coagulation and is obtained by placing switch 102 in the "cut 2" position which opens the ground circuit to terminal 21. In this way, the control multivibrator 10 controls the on- and off-times of the R.F. generator 20 in the same manner as in the "coagulate" mode. However, capacitor (C30) is removed by opening terminals 12, 13 of the multi-vibrator and therefore the on-time is longer and the off-time shorter than before, as represented by waveform A.
