Abstract
1321089 Making bearings; forging; shearing; punching VANDERVELL PRODUCTS Ltd 24 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 45605/70 Addition to 1180742 Headings B3A B3H and B3W [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for making a bearing liner from bearing strip material has a press and means for feeding the strip stepwise through the press, there being a tool operated by the press for making successive portions of the strip arcuate across the strip and coin pressing the outer surfaces of the acurate portions to the required finish, there being also a severing tool for severing the arcuate portions which is operated by a device timed to operate at a time different from that at which the press tool operates on the strip. The strip is formed into arcuate portions by a press described in parent Specification 1,180,742. The arcuate strip then passes to a capsule in which oil holes are punched in the strip by means of a fluid actuated punch 39 (Fig. 2). The arcuate portions are then separated by a capsule 50 (Fig. 3) having a die 55 which shears the strip against the edge of a semi-cylindrical member (not shown) on the piercing capsule side of the capsule 50. The shearing capsule includes a tool 60 which is mounted on a reciprocating rod 62 which co-operates with the die 55 to from notches in the liners. The die 55 and the rod 62 are actuated by pressurized fluid. Fluid is fed to the piercing and shearing capsules from an intensifier 73 via a master cylinder 78 (Fig. 5) which is controlled by a cam located on the crankshaft which operates the press 11. The arrangement is such that the press and shearing device do not operate simultaneously. The rod 62 is actuated by the action of a valve which opens after the shearing operation on each portion has been completed. The actuating pistons of the shearing and piercing devices are returned to their initial positions by fluid from an intensifier 85 which provides fluid at a constant pressure to the cylinders containing the pistons. The pressure of fluid supplied is less than the pressure of the actuating fluid and a relief valve is provided in the supply so that on actuation the fluid in the supply which tends to reset the pistons is bled away.
