Abstract

1320568 Hexahydro-s-triazine derivatives GAF CORP 2 June 1970 [5 June 1969] 26594/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Novel hexahydro-s-triazine derivatives have the following general formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are each (C 1 -C 24 ) alkyl groups, or aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl groups, provided that when one of R and R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, the other is hydrogen, halogen, or an alkoxy, carbalkoxy, haloalkyl, acyl or alkoxycarbonyl group; n is 0 or 1; A is an alkylene chain, and at least one of R and R<SP>1</SP> is ortho to the hydroxy group. The novel compounds may be prepared by either (a) reacting trioxane with acrylonitrile in the presence of H 2 SO 4 to give hexahydro- 1,3,5-triacrylyl-s-triazine and reacting this with a 2,6-dialkylphenol in the presence of a base, (b) reacting phenol with acrylonitrile in the presence of HCl and AlCl 3 to give 4-hydroxybenzyl cyanide, reacting this with an olefin in the presence of an acid to give 3,5-dialkyl-4- hydroxybenzylcyanide and reacting this with trioxane and the presence of H 2 SO 4 , (c) reacting 2,6-dialkylphenol with acrylonitrile to give the 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzylcyanide and then continuing as in (b). The novel compounds may be used as stabilizers for polymers.
