Abstract
1320554 Molybdenum oxides; ammonium molybdate; sodium; potassium molybdates AMERICAN METAL CLIMAX Inc 30 Sept 1970 [2 Oct 1969 (2)] 46586/70 Heading C1A Molybdenum oxide as such or in the form of molybdate is prepared by heating and agitating an aqueous slurry of particulate molybdenum disulphide bearing material while it is in contact with an atmosphere containing free oxygen at a partial pressure of at least 50 p.s.i., e.g. 300-600 p.s.i. Molybdate is produced when the slurry is alkaline. The particulate material may have an average particle size less than 200 U.S. mesh. The slurry may be heated to a temperature of at least 80‹ C. and the atmosphere present may either be air or pure oxygen. The slurry may contain up to 40% by weight of the particulate material. The solid product containing molybdenum oxide may be filtered off, washed with ammonium hydroxide to provide a solution of ammonium molybdate, the solution concentrated to provide crystals of ammonium molybdate, and the crystals calcined to provide molybdenum oxide. When molybdate is produced, the aqueous alkali may be sodium, potassium or ammonium hydroxides, the corresponding molybdate solution being formed. The pH of the slurry may be maintained at above 7 to 12. If ammonium hydroxide is used the molybdate solution may be reduced with hydrogen to yield molybdenum dioxide which may be heated in air to yield molybdenum trioxide.
