Abstract

1320381 Sanitary napkins and diapers KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP 7 July 1970 [13 Aug 1969] 32977/70 Heading A5R A sanitary napkin or diaper comprises an elongated absorbent pad enclosed in a fluidpervious wrapper 20, Fig. 2, having an extension beyond at least one end of the pad to form a tab, such as 22, the wrapper being made of staple fibres discontinuously bonded with a water-soluble adhesive in an amount insufficient to provide the bonded wrapper by itself with adequate strength to support the pad in use, the article thus being readily toilet flushable. The pad may comprise, for example, multiple plies of cellulose wadding with a central pad of wood-fluff. The wrapper is preferably non-woven and may for example, be made from a plurality of carded webs using rayon or other synthetic fibres with a denier of 1 to 8. The adhesive is preferably more soluble in cold water than in hot water and may be polyvinyl alcohol with a percent hydrolysis of from about 79 to 82 and a viscosity of from about 22 to 26 cps. The adhesive is present in amounts up to about 10% by weight of the fibres and comprises up to about 40% of the wrapper surface area. A napkin having a so-called "short" tab 22 at one end and a "long" tab at the other, Fig. 2, may be supported in a panty (30), Figs. 3-5 (not shown), the "short" tab 22 being engaged in a buckle-type member (48), Fig. 5, secured inside the front of the panty. A support for a napkin having a "short" tab at each end comprises a backing member 70, Fig. 7, having an inner fluid-impermeable plastics material layer and an outer layer of cotton, to which member 70 the napkin tabs are attached by means of tabs 84 and press-studs. The support has straps 80 engaging in slots 76 and 78 in the front and back end of the member 70 respectively, said front end being wider than the back end.
