The edges 8, 10, Fig. 7b of a wound may be sutured together by threads 4 to the ends of which are applied flat clips 2 of the type shown in Fig. 6a having limbs 74, 76 extending from a flat body portion to form a V-shaped opening, the limbs being displaceable towards one another to grip a suture thread therebetween, the body portion having a notch 72 and inert sides of the limbs being cut away to form a notch (80), Figures 6b (not shown), opposite to the notch 72 when the clip is closed onto a suture thread. A device which simultaneously applies two spaced clips 2 to a thread 4 and then severs the thread between the applied clips comprises a body portion (14), Fig. 1 (not shown), to which is attached a cartridge (28), holding clips 2 and having means to eject the clips, and handles 16, 18 Figure 3, and jaw parts 38, 40 pivoted to the body 14 at pivots 20, 22, 42 and 44 respectively. The handles and jaws are urged apart by springs 46, (48), Fig. 1, and 43, 45 respectively. Cartridge (28) is elongated, having two parallel, longitudinally extending, clip-containing slots, the clips being urged out of the ends of the slots opposite parts 34, 36 of the jaws by springs or via a handle (60), Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), until limbs 74, 76, Fig. 6a, of the clips engage in recesses 69 in the parts 34, 36. On pivoting together of handles 16 and 18, camming surfaces 47, 49 respectively thereon engage the jaws 40, 38 respectively and move the parts 34, 36 together to squeeze two clips onto a thread in spaced relationship. Further pivoting of the handles engages a projection 70 on a cutter arm 66, which is pivoted at pivot 44, and causes severance of the thread between the attached clips by a cutting edge 67. A projection 68 on cutter arm 66 ensures correct location of the thread prior to severance. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), a second cutter arm (66') is pivoted about pivot 42 and the thread is severed by a scissors action of arms 66, (66'). A device for removing clips from a thread is illustrated in Fig. 8 (not shown).
