Abstract

1318720 Counting particles CORNELL AERONAUTICAL LABORATORY Inc 13 Nov 1970 [18 Nov 1969] 54127/70 Heading G4D [Also in Division G1] Liquid-borne particles are detected by passing them through a light beam which then passes through a diffraction grating 44. A sample of blood and diluent is driven by an impeller 12 through a flattened micro-capillary tube 33 past a light beam. The beam passes through a diffraction grating 44 to cast an image on a plane 46, a small part of which includes a photodetector 48. The output 49 is compared with that 51 of a background detector and sent to a signal analyzer 52. Depending on the characteristics, Fig. 5, of five types of white cell, red cells, and platelets, so signals appear on one or more of three leads 56, 58, 60, to mark one of leads 64-76 to register on an appropriate counter. At the same time a sorter 78 is operated (Fig. 7, not shown) to collect the detected particle.
