Abstract
1318361 The antibiotic polifungin INSTYTUT PRZEMYSLU FARMACEUTYCZNEGO 7 Sept 1970 [11 Sept 1969] 42729/70 Heading C2A A method of preparing the antibiotic polifungin comprises aerobically cultivating a micro-organism of the strain Streptomyces noursei subspecies polifungini, or a mutant or variant thereof, in an aqueous nutrient medium containing sources of assimilable carbon and nitrogen, vitamins and trace elements. The fermentation broth is filtered and the antibiotics removed from the solid by solvent extraction. The antiboitic may be separated into two components, polifungin A and polifungin B, by counter current extraction. Polifungin A is identical to the antibiotic nystatin and may be further separated by counter current extraction into polifungin A 1 and A 2 . Pharmaceutical compositions having antibiotic activity may be prepared by mixing polifungin with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Polifungin is further characterized by thin layer chromatography and the UV and IR spectra which are shown in Figs. 4 and 5 respectively.
