Abstract

1318118 Making poles; welding by fusion MERO AG 10 Aug 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 38493/70 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Division E1] A process for making poles consisting of a hollow bar 1 and end pieces 2, 3, comprises clamping each of the end pieces in a rotatable holder 15, 16, sliding the hollow bar into or over the end pieces, adjusting the end pieces to the overall length of the finished pole, centering the bar 1 with respect to the end pieces, connecting together the bar and end pieces while stationary and rotating and welding the bar to the end pieces. The rotatable holders 15, 16, and the welding apparatus 18, 19, which is of the electric gas-shielded type with automatic welding wire feed, are slidably mounted on tubes 11 and secured thereto by screws 14. The tube 1 is centred by stops 30, 31, fixed to the tubes 11, the stops being moved electromagnetically or by fluid pressure means. After centering, the parts 1, 2, 3, are fastened together whilst stationary by a preliminary welding step before the rotary welding is effected. The end pieces 2, 3 may be provided with bolts 5, 4 respectively, which are retained by nuts (6), (7), Fig. 1 (not shown). The poles may be used in irrigation installations or sprays
