Abstract

1317728 Measuring area TURNER MACHINERY Ltd 17 June 1970 [15 July 1969] 35455/69 Heading G4H [Also in Division G1] An area measuring device comprises two transparent rollers 4a and 4b between which a sheet whose area is to be measured is passed. The rollers are mounted on bearings 7 and the lower row roller is driven by means of a pulley 9, the upper pulley slides in a slot 6 to enable sheets of different thickness to be measured. The sheet is illuminated by a lamp 15, the width of the material is detected by means of a row of photo-cells 14. The length of material passed through the apparatus is measured by means of a scale having holes 17 carried by the roller 4b co-operating with a photo-cell 14a. The passage of a hole passed photo-cell 14a activates a process whereby the photo-cells 14 are scanned. The photo-cells which do not receive light produces pulses which are counted. The total number of pulses counted gives a measure of the area. A pulse divider may be connected to the input of the counter to allow for under measurement.
