1317374 Making springs; coiling helices VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT MEDITSINSKIKH INSTRUMENTOV 12 March 1971 6734/71 Headings B3A and B3E A method of forming a helical spring, e.g. of conical shape with a thickened tail for medical stomatological channel fillers, from a wire 1 is characterized in that each coil of the spring is formed by bending successive portions of the wire on a support 4, by means of a reciprocating striker 5. The wire and the support are suitably rotated and displaced along the axis of rotation. The wire 1 is clamped in a holder 2 in line with a shaft 3 on which are mounted a prismatic rotatable support 4, a reciprocable striker 5 and an apertured guide plate 6 (Fig. 1) which receives a bent end of the wire. After the first bending operation the striker and support are rotated a predetermined angle (Fig. 2c, not shown) and a further bending is effected. After a complete revolution of the striker and support the coil shown in Fig. 3 is formed. The shaft is rotated by an electric motor 8, Fig. 4, through a belt drive 7 and is displaced axially by a cam 21 actuated by a rack and pinion gearing 20 said cam engaging a cam follower 22 in contact with a disc 24 on the shaft (Fig. 4). Rigidly secured on the shaft is a housing 9 carrying double-arm levers 10 and 11 pivoted at 12 and 13 respectively. The support 4 is oscillated by linkage mechanism 17 as the housing rotates which determines the angle of helix of the spring. The shaft freely passes through a cup-type cam 18 having an outer fluted profile engaged by the lever 10 and a smooth inner profile engaged by the lever 11. Alternatively, the striker is actuated by an electromagnetic, hydraulic, pneumatic or other drive while the rotary motion may be imparted to the wire blank instead of the shaft.
