Abstract
1316878 Discharge tubes SAES GETTERS SpA 20 May 1970 [24 May 1969] 24456/70 Heading H1D An alkali metal vapour generator comprises a sealed evacuated container 11, at least one heat responsive source 12 of alkali metal vapour secured in the container, a conduit 15 having one end thereof secured around a part 20 of the container wall and the other end thereof arranged for connection with an evacuated vessel which is to be charged with an alkali metal vapour, and means 22 for rupturing the said part 20 of the container wall whereby an operation thereof after connection of the said other end of the conduit 15 with an evacuated vessel the interior of the container is put in communication with the interior of the evacuated vessel. The generator may be used to form photosensitive surfaces in photo-multiplier, image intensifier and television pick-up tubes, and in the form shown comprises three vapour sources (two 12 and 13 being shown). Source 12 consists of a tube 25 with a slit 27 and containing a mixture 26 of caesium chromate and an alloy of 84% Zr and 16% Al in a weight ratio of one part of chromate to five parts of alloy acting as a reducing agent. The ends of the tube are sealed by terminals 28 and 29 held in place by bands 30 and 31 to enable heating current to be passed through the tube. The other sources may contain potassium chromate and sodium chromate respectively. A non-evaporating getter 16 comprising a pleated substrate having particles of an alloy of 16% Al and 84% Zr embedded therein is disposed between the sources 12, 13 and the conduit 15 with the pleats at an angle to intercept noxious gas molecules following paths such as 35 and 36. The conduit 15 is closed by a nipple 20 having a groove 21 in which is seated a tungsten wire 22 with ends 23 twisted to form a closed loop which can be heated inductively to fracture the nipple 20. The container is exhausted to a pressure of 10<SP>-7</SP> torr. or less through a conduit 39 which is then sealed off.
