Abstract
1316324 Pipe couplings INDUSTRIELE ONDERNEMING WAVIN NV 2 Oct 1970 [2 Oct 1969] 46991/70 Heading F2G A pipe coupling comprises a recessed sleeve 1, sealing members 15, 16 and a coupling member 5 or 51 retained on pipe ends 3, 31 which wedges against the wall of the sleeve recess 4 or 4<SP>1</SP> when the pipe and sleeve are urged apart. In one embodiment, as shown at end A of the sleeve, the coupling member is a frusto-conical split ring 5 formed preferably of metal if the pipe 3 is of thermoplastics material, or of a thermoplastics at least as hard as the pipe material, or of metal coated plastics material. The sleeve 1 may be of polyethylene, P.V.C. or polypropylene. The bore 13 of the ring 5 may be threaded to screw on the threaded portion of the pipe 3 and the outer surface 12 of the ring may also be threaded to grip the surface 11 of the recess 4. A steel sleeve insert 22 may be added to strengthen the pipe end against deformation, and sealing rings 15, 16 in grooves 17, 18 provide a fluid-tight coupling. In another embodiment, shown at end B, the coupling member takes the form of a closed toroidal spring 5<SP>1</SP> of metal wire which grips and penetrates the pipe and sleeve surfaces when the pipe is urged away from the sleeve. If the pipes 3, 3<SP>1</SP> are provided with screw threads of opposite senses then either pipe may be disengaged by rotating the sleeve 1. In an alternative arrangement the sleeve 1 constitutes the end of one of the pipes forming a socket to receive the other pipe 3<SP>1</SP>.
