Abstract

1315153 Punches and strippers HOUDAILLE INDUSTRIES Inc 2 April 1970 18628/71 Divided out of 1315152 Heading B3W A tool assembly; Fig. 3, comprises an apertured die (not shown), a stripper sleeve 148c having a stripper plate 157c at one end and a retaining flange 161c at one other, an apertured spacer plate 151c, a punch retained in the aperture of the plate 151c by means of rings 208c and 225 and being nestable in the stripper sleeve and extendible through the stripper plate and into the die aperture, the upper surface of the plate 151c engaging the flange 161c to prevent upward withdrawal of the punch from the sleeve. An axial lost-motion formed by engagement between a surface 226 on the punch and the stripper plate 157c and between the flange 161c and spacer plate 151c allows relative movement between the stripper sleeve and the punch during punching and stripping. A pin 150c prevents relative rotation between the punch and the plate 151c. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2, not shown, the lower retaining ring 225 is replaced by a shoulder (207a) on the punch and the pin 150c by a horizontal pin (150b). To accommodate punches of smaller diameter than the aperture in the stripper plate an auxiliary stripper plate may be mounted in the aperture of the main stripper plate. In a further embodiment, Fig. 1, where the punch diameter is substantially the same as that of the stripper sleeve the stripper plate takes the form of a sleeve 137a depending from the main stripper sleeve 148a. The punch in all the embodiments is mounted in a holder and drive transmission assembly 14c and retained by spring- loaded balls 62c engaging a recess in the punch head. The tool assembly may be removed by moving the holder down until ball followers 205 are aligned with grooves 183a in a guide portion 130a of a turret press and forcing an ejector pin through passage 195 against the punch head 214, which causes the balls 62c to move outwardly to release the head, the ball followers 205 entering the grooves 183a.
