Abstract
1314205 Seaming non-metallic sheet material EASTMAN KODAK CO 16 July 1970 [16 July 1969] 34523/70 Heading B5K [Also in Division H4] Ultrasonic apparatus (e.g. for uniting overlapping plastics sheets) comprises a piezoelectric transducer and a flat metal mounting plate 15 carrying the transducer, with the plane of the plate 15 disposed at right angles to the axis of longitudinal vibration of the plate 15. The plate 15 is perforated with overlapping non-radial slots 21, 23 so that no uninterrupted path extends radially from the axis to the periphery. In alternative constructions, the plate 15 has perforations in the form of overlapping straight lines slanted obliquely across radii (Fig. 3, not shown) or eight straight slots define a small square and a large square, the squares being relatively offset 45 degrees (Fig. 4, not shown). The apparatus comprises a stepped horn H. The device is operated at a frequency at which the distance from a plane A-A (antinode) to the rear of a mass 13 is #/2. The remainder of the horn H is of length #/2. The plate 15 is at a node. In other arrangements the plate P is fixed to the step 27, or between piezoelectric element 41 and mass 13, or between electrode 43 and one of adjacent piezoelectric elements 41, 42. In a multicrystal device the plate P may be located between upper and lower multi-crystal sandwiches.
