Abstract
1314010 Shaft seals BURNETT & JACKSONLtd 20 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 37310/69 Heading F2B A shaft seal comprises a component consisting of a moulded annulus 1 of resiliently deformable material, e.g. synthetic rubber, one peripheral portion of the annulus being formed as a sealing lip 2 and the other peripheral portion being bonded to a plane rigid carrier ring 3 having one margin embedded in the annulus. The annulus 1 and ring 3 are clamped between a flange 6 of a metal casing 5 and a metal liner 7 by a flange 8 of the casing spun over a flange 9 on the liner 7. The lip 2 is urged inwardly by a garter spring 10. The surface 11 of the lip is moulded to the dotted line, Fig. 1, arid the internal and external diameters of the annulus 1 and ring 2 may be varied within a given range by removing material from one or both peripheral portions thereof; the component then being clamped in an appropriately sized casing 5.
