Abstract
1314069 Dialkylaromatic dihydroperoxides SIGNAL CHEMICAL CO 21 July 1970 [25 July 1969 (2)] 35242/70 Heading C2C In a method of preparing dialkylaromatic dihydroperoxides by oxidizing the corresponding dialkylaromatic hydrocarbon with molecular oxygen in the presence of an alkaline material to produce an oxidation product comprising said dihydroperoxide, a dialkylaromatic monohydroperoxide, unreacted dialkylaromatic hydrocarbon and other oxidation side-products, an improvement comprises mixing the oxidation reaction effluent or crude solid oxidate separated therefrom with a hydrocarbon in which the monohydroperoxide is soluble and the dihydroperoxide is insoluble at a temperature below 30‹ C., maintaining the resulting mixture at a temperature of at least 55‹ C. to dissolve the monohydroperoxide, cooling the mixture to a temperature below 30‹ C. and separating the crystallized dihydroperoxide. Suitable hydrocarbons are benzene, toluene, xylene or the said dialkylaromatic hydrocarbon. If desired, the oxidation reaction product may be treated with a hydrocarbon before separating the solid oxidate. Suitable dialkylaromatic hydrocarbons for use as starting materials include pdi-sec.-butyl benzene, diethylbenzene and xylene and examples are given of the conversion of pdiisopropylbenzene to its dihydroperoxide.
