Abstract
1314065 Moulding fibre/resin articles; laminates KONSTRUKTORSKOE BJURO MEKHANIZATSII I AVTOMATIZA-TSII SUDOSTROENIA 9 April 1970 16813/70 Headings B5A and B5N Lengths of fibre resin sheet material are laid upon a mould 19 by a dispensing head 4 carried by a carriage 3 reciprocable along a bridge truss 1 itself movable along rails 2 over the mould. The head is rotatable about a vertical axis and may be locked at any desired angle. By appropriately orienting the head and moving the head along the truss and the truss over the mould at the necessary relative speeds using a reduction gear assembly 34 and a series of clutches 32, 44, and 53 the sheet material can be laid in any desired orientation on the mould (see parts a-d of Fig. 4). The dispensing head comprises a valve 20 through which resin is cast on to the surface of the mould. Fibre glass sheets are dispensed from a reel 8 around a roller 18 and under a roller 15 carried cantilever fashion from an axle 17 by levers 16 on to the coated mould and are pressed into the resin by the roller 15. The valve/dispensing apparatus complex is carried by a vertically reciprocable framework 14 which remains stationary when a flat mould is used but which may be raised and lowered when a contoured or curved surfaced mould is used. The dispensing head is carried by an axle 5 which is rotated through bevel gear 49. The bevel gear itself rotated by a worm 49 driven through a belt 47 and electromagnetic brake 46 from a motor 45. The head is locked in its desired orientation by electromagnetically controlled stops 50 which engage slots in the dial. In use, longitudinally extending films of release material are deposited side by side on the mould surface by the appropriate movements of the truss and carriage, the head being rotated through 180 degrees at the end of each run along the mould. Subsequently fibre resin sheets are deposited in overlapping side-by-side relation over the release fibre and the whole hardened. First layers of sheets are deposited in the direction shown in Fig. 4a, then successive layers are laid in the directions shown in Figs. 4b, 4c and 4d. Finally the hardened composite sheet thus formed is removed from the mould surface.
