Abstract
1313534 Ultrasonic investigation apparatus; transistor amplifying and detecting circuits PARKE DAVIS & CO 6 May 1970 21925/70 Headings H3T and H4D An investigation apparatus includes a linear amplifier for connection to an electroacoustic transducer the amplifier having two cascaded, capacitively coupled field effect transistors and a detector to detect any modulation in the received signals. The central "eye" 3 of transducer 1 is connected to a 5MHz crystal controlled oscillator 2 and radiates C.W. ultrasound. Reflections from a moving target are received by the outer ring 4, which signals are made up of background reflections at the radiated frequency plus Doppler shifted reflections. The transducer linearly adds these signals producing an amplitude modulated wave, the period of the modulation being proportional to the Doppler shift (Fig. 1, not shown). This is superimposed on any modulation due to changes in reflectivity or size of the object. The signals pass through a noise filter 8 to a two stage f.e.t. linear amplifier, the f.e.t. 9 providing a high input impedance. The amplifier feeds a further filter 14 and an f.e.t. detector 15 and R-C integrator 16, 17, whose output is the low frequency modulation envelope. This is amplified by a low output impedance transistor pre-amplifier which feeds an audio amplifier 7 through a transmission line. The audio amplifier 7 comprises a three transistor amplifier whose D.C. conditions are stabilized by providing three series connected diodes to bias the first transistor and by D.C. coupling to the other two (Fig. 3, not shown). The apparatus may be used for measuring heart beat or blood flow, measurement of liquid flow in industrial processes, detection of marine life, or detection of vibration in machines.
