Abstract
1313510 Electro-lubrication AMERICAN METAL CLIMAX Inc 29 Oct 1970 [13 Nov 1969] 55605/69 Heading C7B A method of providing an extreme pressure lubricating film on an article that has an electrically conducting surface comprises making the article an anode in an electrolytic cell, the electrolyte containing a soluble organic sulphur compound, and passing an electric current through the cell whereby a suphur containing constituent is formed in the electrolyte from which the lubricant film is produced on the surface of the article. The method is suitable for all forms of metalworking but it is particularly directed to "in line" processes such as as wire drawing. Molybdenum or steel wire 14 is made the anode in cell 16 containing sulphuric acid, ammonium molybdate and either thioacetomide or thiourea. The cell is provided with counter electrodes 18 and rubber seals 17. A molybdenum disulphide film is electrolytically deposited on the wire before it is drawn through die 10. The molybdenum disulphide film may be subsequently removed by the use of alternating current in a second cell 22.
