Abstract
1313409 Vacuum quenching furnace SOLA BASIC INDUSTRIES Inc 15 June 1970 [12 Feb 1970] 28895/70 Heading F4B A vacuum heat treating and quenching apparatus includes a water cooled evacuable chamber 10 containing an electric furnace 16 and an oil filled quench tank 15. A pair of rails 31 are attached to a removable cover 14 of the chamber 10 on which rails run a load hand ling dolly 29. In operation with cover 14 retracted from chamber 10 along rails 44, a metallic load 28 is positioned on hydraulically actuated counter-pivotable parallel support arms 33 of the dolly 29, then the cover 14 moved to close off chamber 10 and position dolly 29 and rails 31 as shown. A vacuum is drawn and dolly 29 propelled by chain drive 41 along rails 31 to charge load 28 into furnace 16. Arms 33 are then counter-pivoted to deposit load 28 on furnace supports 21, the dolly 29 withdrawn and hydraulically actuated furnace door 17 closed. After the heating the dolly 29 withdraws load 28 from the furnace 16 and positions it over the quench tank 15. In this position gas cooling of load 28 using electric circulating fan 45 may be effected, if desired. A telescopic hydraulic lifting cylinder 27 in quench tank 15 is then actuated to raise support platform 27A to the level of dolly 29. The arms 33 are again counter pivoted to transfer load 28 to platform 27A which is then lowered to quench the load in tank 15. After quenching, platform 27A is raised, the load retransferred to dolly 29, air admitted to chamber 10 to break the vacuum, and the dolly and the load withdrawn for unloading by retracting cover 14. The quench tank 15 is equipped with heat dissipating flow channeling walls 22, 23 and an electric agitator 26.
