Abstract
1313162 Making coated steel sheet and foil USS ENGINEERS & CONSULTANTS Inc 23 April 1970 [23 April 1969] 19637/70 Heading B3A A method of making corrosion resistant coated sheet steel or foil comprises applying a coating or one of their alloys of chromium, copper, nickel and titanium on to a pickled hot rolled steel band and cold reducing the coated band to the desired final gauge. The steel has a carbon content, of up to 0À12% and is acid pickled to remove hot-mill scale. Chromium is applied by exposing chromium-halogen containing gases to the steel at a temperature of 1650-2100‹ F. Alternatively it may be packchromized in a retort using ferrochromium. The coated steel is reduced by conventional cold rolling and if the final thickness is less than 0À006 inch intermediate annealing is necessary, in addition to a final anneal. Continuous annealing is preferred, but where only one anneal is necessary, box annealing may be used.
