Abstract

1313093 Measuring permeability BRITISH CERAMIC RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 19 April 1971 [17 Feb 1970] 7552/70 Heading G1S A device for measuring the permeability of pipes, conduits, tiles, plates or other articles made of porous materials such as ceramics, concrete or cement-asbestos comprises a suction head 6, a rubber moulding 5 mounted on the head 6 and having a beading 7 for enclosing an area of the surface of an article 9 in an airtight manner, and a pipe 8 for applying vacuum to the enclosed area. The vacuum is applied by means of a vacuum line D having solenoid valves A, B and C, pressure switch F and mercury manometer G. In use, valves A and B are opened by manual operation of a switch on the suction head. When the requisite vacuum has been attained in the suction head, pressure switch F operates and causes valves A and B to close. The permeation of air into the enclosed space is measured by manometer G. An audible or visual alarm is given when the pressure in the head has increased by a predetermined amount, the alarm being actuated by means of electrical contacts on manometer G or by a pressure switch. Timers may be provided to measure the time taken for the pressure in the head to change by the predetermined amount or the timers may provide an audible or visual warning at a predetermined time from the commencement of the test. The suction head may be round or elliptual, Fig. 4 (not shown), in cross-section. The sealing head 7 may be of radius form or of V-section, or may consist of two spaced knife edge headings, possibly with other knife edges therebetween.
