Abstract
1312229 Pipe testing apparatus AMF Inc 8 July 1971 [20 July 1970] 32127/71 Headings G1N and G1S The detector of a pipeline inspection apparatus has helical motion imparted thereto as it passes longitudinally through the pipeline. The inspection unit 13, for detecting electro-magnetically longitudinally extending cracks and flaws, is coupled via universal joint 27 rotary section 12, swivel joint 18 and universal joint 17 to an elastomeric cup 16. Rotary unit 12 includes three canted wheels 22 arranged around support member 20 so that as the apparatus is forced through the pipeline by fluid pressure acting on cup 16 rotary unit 20 rotates thereby causing the inspection unit 13 to scan the inside of pipe 10. The inspection unit 13 includes a longitudinally extending magnetic core 30 provided with solenoid 31 and provided with brush pole pieces 35, 36 which contact the inside surface of pipe 10 and circumferentially direct a magnetic flux field in each half of the pipeline wall. The detection coils 57 are mounted in longitudinally extending housings 55, 56 supported by flexible pins 46, 47 on the core 30. Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) indicated alternative arrangements of transducer mountings and flux producing means for use in increased diameter pipelines. The electronic flaw signalling and receiver apparatus is mounted in housing 60 which rotates along with the inspection apparatus as it moves through the pipeline 10.
