Abstract

1312024 Sintered Fe base - Cu base composites TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 27 Oct 1971 [27 April 1971] 49838/71 Heading C7D [Also in Division F1] Sintered Fe base - Cu base composites such as valve seats for I.C. engines are made by coating an Fe base substrate with a Cu-Ni powder mixture, sintering the coated substrate and then abutting the coated surface with a mass of Cu base powder and sintering the composite. The Fe base substrate which may be a powder layer, a green compact or a sintered compact preferably consists of 96% Fe - 3% Mo - 1% C; the Cu-Ni bonding powder preferably consists of 50% Cu - 50% Ni and the Cu base powder preferably consists of 80% Cu - 8% Sn - 12% Cr. A 0À5-1 mm thick layer of 50Cu/50Ni is compacted at 6t/cm<SP>2</SP> on to the Fe base substrate which is then sintered at 1150-1180‹ C in cracked NH 3 . The Cu base powder was compacted on to the coated surface at 6t/cm<SP>2</SP> and the assembly was then sintered at 900-950‹ C under N 2 .
