Abstract

131,191. Bonnella, A. J., and Damey, R. K. Sept. 16, 1918, Switches, quick-brcak.- The spring 12 which produces the quick break connects the bridging contactmember 8 and the cone member 15, both of which are loosely mounted on the operating-spindle 9, which passes in a watertight manner through the casing and has a handle 17 at each end; the spring serves both to produce the quick-break and to retain the switch set in the closed position. The " fixed " contacts, which are pivoted on conducting-plates 5 on which the circuit terminals are mounted, have a hook formation at one end and a roller at the other. To close the switch, the upper handle is depressed and the collar 10 upon the spindle carries down the bridge contact which compresses the spring which, in turn, presses upon the cone member, the sides of which bear against the rollers and tend to separate them and consequently bring the hooked contact parts 7 closer together. The bridge member slides between the contact plates separating them slightly and thereby lifting the cone member and further compressing the spring slightly, and, finally, the bridge member is retained by the hooked ends of the contacts. The spring acting on the bridge contact tends to push aside the hooked contacts, but at the same time, acting through the cone member, it tends to maintain the contacts hooked upon the bridge member, and, in the latter action, the spring has the greater leverage and, consequently, the switch remains closed. It is opened by pressing inwards the other end of the actuating-rod, thereby raising the cone member and unlocking the contacts and further compressing the spring so as to ensure the release and rapid " off " movement of the bridge member. A small pressel switch, according to the invention, is shown in Fig. 3, in which one press-button 29 carries the movable contact 24, and a rod sliding telescopically in the other press-button 27, which has a conical formation 26 engaging the ends of the '' fixed " contacts, which are pivoted on the circuit terminals 22 and formed with hooks at their other ends.
