Abstract
1311363 Sonic web dryer DOMINION ENG WORKS Ltd 17 June 1970 [7 July 1969] 29440/70 Heading F4G [Also in Division D2] An apparatus for drying long webs of, e.g. paper or felt which may be at rest or in motion, partly by the effect of sound waves, comprises two chambers 12, 14 one on each side of the web 20 to be dried. The chambers are provided with stem jet whistles 26 which are supplied with gas, for example air, via conduits 24. Sound reflectors 28 and 30 concentrate sound from the whistles 26 and sound reflected from the web 20 respectively. The cover 16 which is made from reverberation plates is also specially positioned, the distances A and B being multiples of the whistle half-wavelength. Sound waves are directed normally to the web so that dislocation of water droplets occurs. The sound generators 18 also include supporting side-walls 25 having apertures 32 which, with apertures 22, allow wet air to be exhausted from the chambers 12, 14. Figs. 3, 4, 5 (not shown) show apparatus disposed outside the drying space for recirculating part of the exhaust air. The end walls 23 of chambers 12, 14 are designed to retain sound as are mechanical wipers, Fig. 6 (not shown), which also serve to guide the web and to remove moist air from the vicinity of the web. Electrical hoaters, Fig. 5 (not shown), may be provided to heat an independent supply of air to the web. Circular sound generators, may be used instead of cylindrical generators 18. The web may rest or travel in a vertical plane or be supported by a wire mesh, Fig. 5 (not shown), in a horizontal plane. The method of use of the apparatus is also claimed.
